Session Description

This session will introduce proven strategies that allow participants to gain confidence in the following areas. By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1.  Interpret core financial statements — including the Balance Sheet, Profit & Loss Statement, and Cash Flow Statement — and understand their relevance in the private club context.
  2.  Identify and apply budgeting fundamentals, including key financial drivers and bottom-up budgeting approaches tailored to private club operations.
  3.  Analyze financial variances by comparing actual vs. budgeted results to identify performance issues and opportunities.
  4.  Develop basic financial projections to inform decision-making and operational planning within their clubs.
  5.  Collaboratively assess financial data through hands-on exercises, enhancing their confidence in applying concepts to real-world club scenarios.
  6.  Effectively present departmental performance using financial statements from their own clubs, demonstrating improved financial communication skills.

This session will equip participants with a foundational understanding of private club financial statements and budgeting principles, enhancing their ability to interpret, analyze, and communicate financial data effectively. Through a combination of instruction and hands-on exercises, attendees will learn to apply key financial tools such as variance analysis and projections, and gain confidence in presenting departmental performance using real-world club data. The learning outcomes align with the CCM competencies in Accounting & Finance, Leadership, Human & Professional Resources, and Interpersonal Skills, supporting participants in making informed financial decisions and contributing to the overall fiscal health of their clubs.


Learning Objectives

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

  •  Interpret financial performance and position by developing an understanding of key financial statements (balance sheet, income statement, cash flow)
  •  Identify key business drivers relevant to financial performance in their Clubs
  •  Apply key concepts to build budgets, analyze variances, and project financial performance for their Club / department
  • Participate as an effective business partner at their Club, supporting financial leadership for their specific areas of oversight/responsibility

Liz McDowell, CPA, CA, CCM, GGA Partners

Liz McDowell is a Director with GGA Partners and an experienced executive specializing in strategic planning, corporate governance, management, operations, finance, and accounting. Liz brings a unique blend of professional services experience, professional accreditation, and private club operational experience to GGA clients. A Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA, CA), Certified Club Manager (CCM), and seasoned private club manager with over ten years of experience operating a premier private golf club, Liz provides an impactful and valuable perspective to GGA’s full complement of service offerings from transaction advisory to strategy and operations consulting, to research and analytics services.

In Liz’s most recent posting as the Chief Operating Officer of a premier private golf and country club, she oversaw a number of unusual and complex transactions, including a detailed forensic investigation, the sale of the Club’s land and buildings for $450M, and a series of complex post-sale decisions, including the transition from Non-Profit Organization to taxable corporation, and declarations of cash and stock dividends.

Liz holds an HBA from the Ivey Business School, where she graduated with distinction as a member of the Dean’s list. She began her career in 2004 with KPMG, LLP in what became the Consumer Markets audit practice where she earned her Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA, CA) designation. In 2011, Liz joined the private club sector, starting as the Financial Controller for the York Downs Golf & Country Club where her role continually expanded through to her appointment as the Chief Operating Officer.

Active across the club industry, Liz has served on a number of association and private club advisory boards and committees. She has delivered educational sessions and programs, been a featured speaker and panelist within the industry and served as the subject matter expert for PGA Canada “Finance Essentials for Golf Industry Leaders” course. Liz has also supported student CPA’s with academic mentorship through the CPA, CA designation process, and spent three seasons as an evaluator of the National CPA, CA proficiency examination, now known as the CFE.
