2023 National Conference

The CMAC 2023 National Conference finished last week with a bang. Well, more of a “POP” thanks to Emily O'Brien, Founder of Comeback Snacks ["popcorn so good, it's criminal"].

Over the four days, attendees were led through sessions on DE&I, Cybersecurity, Pay Transparency, Tapping Into our Mental Strength, and exactly what Gen-Z is seeking in an employer. We had a visit from the Ted Lasso of club management, talked about Club Governance and Members who Behave Badly, had the industry’s largest Round Table Un-Session, and learned more about the effective use of KPI.

Who can forget our Keynote Speaker, author and restauranteur, Will Guidara. Will is the author of the National Bestseller “Unreasonable Hospitality”, which chronicles the lessons in service and leadership he has learned over the course of his career in restaurants. He is the former co-owner of Eleven Madison Park which, under his leadership, received four stars from the New York Times, three Michelin stars, and in 2017 was named #1 on the list of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants.

Socially, we were treated to the best views in Canada atop the CN Tower at the opening reception, and the best views of the city skyline at the Island Clubhouse of the Royal Canadian Yacht Club for the President’s Dinner. Tomahawk steaks were ablaze at Toronto Golf Club, followed by station upon station at Mississaugua Golf and Country Club during the progressive dinner. And finally, the companions were treated to a glass making session, art drawing course, and private tour at The Arts and Letters Club.

Golf was played at the venerable Rosedale Golf Club, the University Club of Toronto opened its doors for the return of the Hospitality Suite, and Jana-Lyn Fairbairn, CCM was elected your new Association president at the conclusion of the Annual Meeting.

WHAT A WEEK!

All of this could only be accomplished through the tremendous support of our conference committee, the team at the CMAC national office, and, of course, our partners and sponsors. We thank each and every one of them.

Thank you, attendees, for engaging so freely and making the most of your time at conference. Please be sure to take 10-minutes out of your day to complete the survey. Your important input will shape future conferences. Access to the presentation slides will be available soon.

For the members who were unable to attend, please know you were missed.

The CMAC 2024 National Conference returns to Kelowna, B.C. from October 19-22, 2024. Please mark your calendars now. Conference chair, Thom Killingsworth, and his committee are already well into planning an exceptional week for us.

To the membership, thank you for giving us the opportunity to serve as your 2023 Conference co-chairs. It was 18-months of fun, excitement, and stress - all at the same time; and all of which ended with a fabulous “pop”.

Sincerely,
